XAVIER SAMUEL
How did you land the highly coveted role of Riley?
”I flew to Vancouver on a ‘maybe’ with four other guys to meet the director. It was like putting all your eggs into one basket because I had to turn down a pilot to go to Vancouver. I’m pretty glad I did.”

If any part of what you see in the supernaturally superserious Twilight movies is to be believed, then there is no shortage of brooding, good-looking young men in the American Pacific Northwest. But when it comes to the pool of eligible teenage bachelors in the town of Forks, Washington, which provides the setting for much of the series, it seems that each and every one of them comes with an at times hidden but ultimately undeniable set of baggage (e.g., the hottest guy in school, Edward Cullen, is a vampire and actually very old; the nonthreatening friend and love interest, Jacob Black, wolfs out).
The situation, though, is not likely to improve this summer with the arrival in June of the world-engulfing franchise’s third installment, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse—and 26-year-old Australia-born actor Xavier Samuel, the latest good-looking young man to appear on the Twilight scene. In Eclipse, erstwhile love-triangle mates Edward (Robert Pattinson), Jacob (Taylor Lautner), and the object of their mutual affection, the irresistibly over-it Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) confront a bloodthirsty army of murderous “newborn” vampires created by witchy redhead Victoria (played in Eclipse by Bryce Dallas Howard, who replaces Rachelle Lefevre). Samuel plays Riley, Victoria’s lead newbie and main pinch, who aids the vampiress in her attempt to once and for all vanquish the holy trinity. “I initially saw a Quicktime movie of Xavier auditioning for Riley and immediately knew he had something,” says David Slade, who directed Eclipse. “It was that intangible something that you can’t quite describe but that you know is worth watching.” Indeed, Samuel has already become a bit of a thing among Twilight fans (who are peerless when it comes to creating things), inspiring all manner of tortured Internet-discussion-board threads. “I will forever be Team Edward in my heart. . . . Xavier [Riley] just confuses the issue a little,” wrote one blogger in August, wrestling with the 21st century’s great postmodern teen-worship dilemma: In a world where one is forced to choose between evilness and hotness, can any sort of moral framework ever exist?
In addition to Eclipse, Samuel—a veteran of a handful of indies down under—recently completed work on Roland Emmerich’s forthcoming political thriller, Anonymous. His Eclipse co-star, Howard, reconnected with the actor, who was back home in Australia, visiting family and preparing for the deluge. • Read full story…

Xavier, you’re calling from Europe, I understand. Whereabouts?
I’m driving in a black-tinted car on the streets of Berlin.
That’s how you roll?
This is how I roll, man!
Nice. You’re in Berlin shooting—wait for it—a Roland Emmerich movie about Shakespeare. Is this the same Roland Emmerich who did Independence Day and 2012? Please tell me the Rose Theatre blows up at the end of this one.
No, but there is a lot of green screen, a lot of special effects. They’re really re-creating the London from that time. It’s going to be quite visually spectacular. I play the Earl of Southampton. He’s one of the only people that Shakespeare ever dedicated his work to.
So is Shakespeare gay in this movie?
There’s a lot of speculation about that. Historically, some scholars have theorized that Southampton was Shakespeare’s lover. But the film is about the authorship of the plays—who actually wrote them.
Who was it, then?
Maybe the Earl of Oxford. In this film, Shakespeare was some illiterate actor who was putting his name to plays he didn’t even write. It’s a thriller.
Speaking of thrillers: You’re on the poster for the new Twilight film, Eclipse. How did this happen?
I did the audition from Sydney. I put the audition down on tape and sent it over.
Actors are always putting themselves on tape. But they never actually get the role that way!
I’ve been doing that for quite a while—doing these auditions from Australia and sending them out. I don’t know whose desk they land on, or if anyone even watches them. To hear back was a surprise. I flew to Vancouver on a maybe. It was me and four other guys. And I was shooting before I knew it.
Were you a fan of the Twilight series? Tell the truth.
I watched the first film on the plane, on the way over to Vancouver. Then I went straight to the bookstore.
Funny. You play Riley, a hungry newborn vampire out on a rampage. Full disclosure: I read the book, and Riley’s only on one page.
Yes, I was flipping through the book, thinking: Where’s Riley? He’s whittled down to one line. But in the film, we venture into the world of Riley and watch him assembling this newborn army. It’s more action-packed. And it gives me something more to do, thankfully.
Do you get to inflict much damage on the world?
There was no neck biting. I threw a vampire off of a burning car. I also threw a massive log with one hand. The log was attached to a hydraulic system. It made me look really strong.
Is it hard to be the new kid in a franchise like this?
It is a bit like the first day of school. But I felt like part of the family.
Most of your scenes are with Bryce Dallas Howard—who plays the villain, Victoria. She was also new to the Twilight family. Did that help?
We bonded quite early. We just kind of hit it off from the very beginning, rehearsed a lot of stuff, and talked about this almost Lady Macbeth kind of relationship.
You’re intellectualizing Twilight.
You see that Shakespeare reference I just made? [laughs] But she manipulates him in that way.
I’m impressed. How was the green-screen work? Obviously you’re not fighting wolves.
The director would yell Action! and this guy puts a stick in your face. That stick is the wolf. They didn’t teach that at drama school. I must have been sick that day.
Last question: You’re one of many Australians working in Hollywood. Do you all know one another?
We have cult meetings at midnight, somewhere near the Hollywood sign.

When Xavier Samuel arrived in Vancouver last summer, he didn’t make it far past baggage claim before he started making headlines. With just a few offbeat Australian flicks under his belt, the sandy-haired 26-year-old had been chosen to play newborn vampire Riley, the latest heartthrob in The Twilight Saga. Almost instantaneously he was being hailed as Robert Pattinson’s doppelgänger and couldn’t get coffee without seeing flashbulbs.
“It was all very sudden, not just with the paparazzi but also with being cast in general,” says Xavier, who’s been acting since high school. “I did an audition from Sydney on tape. Then I got word that it was down to four guys—and that I was one of them.” (Rumor has it he beat out Channing Tatum and Harry Potter’s Tom Felton for the part.)
But the role of Riley was a perfect fit—and Xavier had a blast hanging out on the set of Eclipse. An indie-rock aficionado who has recently been digging The Magnetic Fields and The xx, Xavier joined in on periodic jam sessions with fellow guitarists Robert and Jackson Rathbone. (Xavier travels everywhere with his old Yamaha C-40.) And he bonded with Bryce Dallas Howard—his on-screen love interest, vampire trainer Victoria—who thought she was helping him get acclimated with stateside pop culture when she bought him a DVD box set of Lost. “People think that there’s, like, one public phone in Australia and that we all ride kangaroos to work,” the Adelaide native jokes. “They’re surprised we do actually get American TV and things there.” • Read full story…
